Sausage French Toast Bake

With sweet hints of orange and maple and a salty bite from sausage, this French Toast is the best of sweet meets savory when it comes to brunch.

Ingredients

  • 9 slices *thick-cut day old brioche bread, cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes If you do not have day old bread, see notes
  • 1 package Jones Dairy Farm All NaturalPork Sausage, defrosted (9 links)
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest 1 large orange, about 2 teaspoons
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup

Instructions

  • Lightly grease an 8x8 baking dish.
  • If you haven’t already, slice the bread into 1 1/2 -inch cubes. Slice the sausage into three even pieces.
  • Layer half of the bread in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with half of the sausage. Layer remaining bread on top followed by remaining sausage.
  • Add the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and orange zest to a medium bowl. Whisk to combine. Pour the mixture over the bread and sausage. Use the back of a spoon to make sure the top pieces get soaked into the bread.
  • Cover with foil or plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least two hours or overnight.
  • When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Take the French Toast Bake out of the fridge at let it come to room temperature while the oven preheats.
  • Bake covered for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 10-15 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  • Drizzle with maple syrup and dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm with extra maple syrup.
