Supreme Pizza Pinwheel Poppers

Things I’m currently grateful for:

  • a happy and healthy family
  • boots that keep my feet warm and dry in the midst of winter
  • parents that love and watch my kids. for free.
  • a car with heated seats
  • a day that allows us to eat ALL the bad-for-you dips, snacks mixes, and finger foods. aka Game Day.

What is it about a football game that makes us think we can bury our noses in buffalo chicken dip, cheeseburger sliders, and all things indulgent? I have no idea, but I’ll take it.

Supreme pizza pinwheel poppers are perfect for those of you out there that aren’t great at planning ahead, because these babies   can be throw together last minute, no problem.

I know because I threw them together very last minute for Kevin and some of his buds. I left him explicit instructions to heat them up for just a few minutes when the boys got there. And I even left him a pretty little platter to put them on with two different kinds of dipping sauces.

Did he warm them up? Nope.

Did he put them on a platter? Nope.

Apparently the boys devoured them room temperature, straight from the muffin tins with no sauce. It could have been the beer, but I’m pretty sure they were just that good. I mean, what’s not to love about pepperoni, mozzarella and green peppers rolled up in a buttery crescent roll and served with pizza sauce??

Layer pepperoni, cheese, and peppers on dough.

Ingredients in Supreme Pizza Pinwheel Poppers

Crescent roll dough. I know this isn’t the most homemade ingredient out there, but for game day food, I’m willing to make a compromise. Crescent rolls dough is sweet, delicious, and easy to work with. I like to buy the crescent roll sheets to make rolling the pizza pinwheel poppers easier to put together.

Pepperoni. No need for explanation here.

Green peppers. You could really use whatever you want here – mushrooms, green peppers, sausage – any classic pizza toppings. Of course, if you want to stick with the five-ingredient recipe, only choose one ingredient, but honestly, you can stuff as much as possible in the poppers.

Mozzarella cheese. Just like a traditional pizza, you want to use mozzarella cheese you shred yourself. If you really want something delicious, use whole-milk mozzarella (the same we use in our perfect pepperoni pizza.).

Garlic butter. This is kind of an optional ingredient, but I think it adds a lot of flavor to the pizza pinwheel poppers. You can find garlic butter pretty much anywhere these days, but if you can’t find it, you can also use plain salted butter.

Roll up jelly-roll style

How to make Supreme Pizza Pinwheel Poppers

Roll out the dough. Even though the crescent roll dough is already in one sheet, you do need to roll it out a little bit so you can get 24 rolls out of the dough. Gently flour a large cutting board and rolling pin with a little bit of flour. Roll the dough out to 10×12 rectangle. Cut the dough into two 5×12 rectangles.

Layer the ingredients. Brush the melted garlic butter over the surface of the dough. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Evenly sprinkle the cheese between the two sheets of dough. Sprinkle with green peppers. Layer the pepperoni on top. Roll up tightly, jelly-roll style. Pinch the seams together.

Cut. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 24 (12 on each roll) pizza pinwheel poppers.

Bake. Generously grease two mini muffin tins with non-stick cooking spray. Place the pizza pinwheel poppers in the pan, cut-side down and facing up. Bake until golden brown and cheese has melted, about 10-12 minutes.

Cut into 24 pinwheels

Can I make these in advance?

Yes! You can either:

  • Make the pizza pinwheel poppers up until cutting them. Wrap them in plastic wrap and store in the fridge for 24 hours before serving. When you’re ready to serve, cut them into pinwheels and bake as instructed.
  • If you’re serving them without an hour or two, you can also make them from start to finish, undercook by 1-2 minutes. Leave them in the mini muffin tin and let them cool completely. Cover with foil and then re-heat in a 350 degree oven just before serving.

Substitutions and Tips and Tricks for Recipe Success

  • Feel free to sub out your favorite pizza ingredients. If you don’t like pepperoni, swap out cooked sausage, hamburger, or even chicken.
  • Serve with pizza sauce or ranch for dipping.
  • Be sure to grease your mini muffin tin VERY well. These pizza pinwheel poppers will absolutely stick if you don’t grease the pan adequately.
  • Brush the tops before baking with more garlic butter for a little extra indulgence.

I don’t have a mini muffin tin – do you think i could get away with making it in a regular size?

That should work fine! Just keep an eye on them and make sure they don’t burn.
